How to succeed in the Next Normal

Due to the recent crisis, companies' strategies moved from growth and profit, to cash flow and market share keeping in just 3 months. It has been a shock!

We are now approaching the so-called Next Normal: while it's difficult to predict in detail what the future holds for us, the normality we'll be facing is surely going to have a different shape than before. Habits forcibly introduced by the crisis will become part of this Next Normal: remote working, digital signature, collaboration tools just to mention a few... Perceived as disruptive innovation before, they have become a must to run daily business - and will remain so in the future.

"Nothing sparks innovation like a crisis.
This is an opportunity for an existential flex."
Simon Sinek - March 24, 2020

The Next Normal will be not totally new. Recent events have escalated existing priorities and introduced new ones. Strategies to optimize costs or improve productivity were already in place before, but now their relevance is way higher and such goals must be reached in a global scenario never experienced before.

On the other hand, companies that were seeing digital technologies just as an additional opportunity to enrich their physical businesses are now forced to put them at the center of their new strategy. Digital is the enabler of new business models, allows to create brand new revenue streams and is the ingredient to boost the recovery process.

Advisory

ACHIEVE A PEOPLE-CENTRIC DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

We believe in a people-centric approach to any project: enabled by technology, people are the real heart of transformation and responsible for a company’s success.

In line with this vision, our digital advisory services are meant to help our customer’s people to take full advantage of technologies, supporting them in the choice and definition of their digital roadmaps: an innovation journey that always starts from people, to develop solutions truly built around their needs.

Our strong technical background translates into a concrete and pragmatic advisory: we love new, exponential technologies - such as Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Process Mining, Blockchain, Digital Fabrication, Robotic Process Automation - and we want our customers to design feasible, usable solutions to get real benefits from their adoption. Not just cool: useful is our favorite keyword.

Mixing people, exponential technologies and our own methodology inspired by Design Thinking, we are able to support our customers in optimizing their business processes and factories, increasing efficiency and enabling business model transformation.

Supply Chain & Suppliers

FEED YOUR BUSINESS WITH A COLLABORATIVE, REACTIVE SUPPLY CHAIN

With its role in feeding the production process, Supply Chain has always been a key process for any organization and becomes even more critical today.

In the business ecosystem era, companies are no longer stand-alone entities but should be considered as a part of larger networks made of suppliers, consultants, employees, clients and governments. The virtuous interaction of all these players is what makes them able to react and recover from crisis.

Having end-to-end visibility on the Supply Chain, often managed by several transactional systems, is key to reorganize production cycles when facing dramatic changes in demand.

A deep knowledge of suppliers, their capacity and risk exposure is essential to manage win-win relationships, while the ability to source materials and components in a digital and rapid way will allow companies to survive in today’s peculiar scenario, and prepare them to thrive in the near future.

In this new scenario, employees and managers need to orchestrate their processes and tasks from their own devices, in their living rooms: end-to-end monitoring, mobility and smart features such as Google-like searches for all types of documents and data become essential for a real-time, effective decision making.

Production

ENABLE A RESPONSIVE, FLEXIBLE PRODUCTION

The shape of the Next Normal is still blurred, but production processes have already been stressed up to the limit: we have all witnessed great stories of companies that converted their daily business production to provide surgical masks, sanitizing gel or assisted breathing devices during the peak of the pandemic.

Plants and production lines are running under conditions never experienced before: dramatic changes in demand, reduced presence of operators, increased safety policies are just a few of the elements that drive to a different way of monitoring and managing production activities.

The ability to remotely monitor running plants and simulate performances, digital stress test and maintenance work can enable a modern production, more responsive and flexible, able to support companies in their recovery stage.

Sales, Services & Customer Experience

ENGAGE, RETAIN, DELIGHT YOUR CUSTOMERS ACROSS CHANNELS

During lockdown, the value of eCommerce and digital sales has become clear. The digital channel, born to complement and extend physical stores, quickly became the only option for many businesses - and will likely remain the preferred channel in the upcoming future. For many companies, not selling online means not selling at all.

Establishing trust between buyers and vendors is a key element to sell more and better. In physical retail stores, such trust is gained mainly through human interactions - but you can establish the same trust in the digital world, by delivering delightful, consistent and omnichannel experiences to your customers.

To achieve that and distinguish yourself from the competition, you need an efficient eCommerce site along with the ability to build an end-to-end customer journey to guide your clients through all phases of their buying process - from the item selection, to the purchase experience and post-sale services.

Whether you have a B2B or B2C business, engaging your customers with excellent online shopping experiences will get your brand straight to their heart.

Administration, Finance & Controlling

DATA-DRIVEN DECISIONS AND PLANNING FOR A HEALTHY BUSINESS

Cash is king – and it’s even more important today, representing the oxygen for companies who need to sustain their business during the crisis and prepare to recover.

Sailing in the storm requires more frequent adjustments of the route: financial monitoring has increased, as well as board meetings that are now held digitally on a weekly basis, or even more often.

Increased control on cash flow and tight monitoring on costs structure have to be complemented with enhanced planning and simulation capabilities.
Best, worst and most-likely scenarios - typical outcomes of spreadsheet-based simulations - are not meaningful enough today. Organizations need the ability to predict the level of risk associated to every scenario: what risks are they taking by implementing a certain business decision, and what is their probability of success?

The role of Administration, Finance & Control is critical in preparing the condition for recovery: the balance between the immediate need for cost reduction and a mid-term strategy of cost optimization defines in which position each company will be once the economy starts running again.

Extended Automation & Optimization

ORCHESTRATE PEOPLE, PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR FAST INNOVATION

The resilience of your systems - infrastructure, networks, applications, data – is key to prevent outages, minimize their impacts and be able to recover quickly.

But unless running data centers across the globe is your core business, the ability of your company to face major disruptive events is time lower than the capabilities of a global cloud provider – it’s a simple matter of investments and scale

Relying on cloud services to run the business, completely or in part, has proved to be a major advantage for organizations while facing the emergency. We experienced this ourselves: at Techedge we were able to shut down all physical offices around the world and switch to 100% smart working in just a weekend. Collaboration never stopped, web conferencing saw a 20x increase – with no disruption, thanks to our cloud providers.

Cloud can drive additional value not only through enhanced collaboration and remote working capabilities. Cloud platforms, in fact, allow to develop quick and effective solutions to address contingent needs: combining ready-to-use services, DevOps and serverless architectures, organizations can introduce smart solutions in a short time, with an extremely fast ROI.

Robotic Process Automation and Orchestration is another effective mean to reach cost optimization and increased efficiency: organizations can assign repetitive, low value-added tasks to robots, increasing productivity and quality while freeing up valuable human resources.

People Management

WORK SMART, WORK SAFE, WORK TOGETHER

Technology-driven companies are in a better position to manage disruptive situations and, moreover, recover from them.

Having a digital workforce equipped with laptops, mobiles, connectivity devices along with a cloud-based collaboration system, represents a clear advantage when you have to react quickly in unexpected circumstances. At Techedge, thanks to such an organization, we were able to activate smart working for more than 2,000 people in 11 countries in a couple of days, by simply sending an email.

Technology plays an important role in managing downturns, enabling smart working and collaboration - but there are other key elements to take into consideration.

While working remotely, employees need more than ever to receive timely and effective communications, feel supported and still part of a team

Moreover, organizations need to equip themselves to make everyone feel safe in the present and, more importantly, in the future when they will be back to their offices under unprecedented circumstances and policies.

Environmental, Social & Governance

BACK TO THRIVE IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY

Communication is the most powerful tool every Captain has. Whether the ship is navigating in shallow waters or through stormy seas, everybody needs to know that there is someone at the helm who is safely leading the crew. This is achieved through consistent and transparent communication on all strategic direction, decisions and consequent actions.

Alignment between strategy and operations is an everyday need. In crisis times, a company’s success can easily be measured by the overall clarity of communication and the level of cooperation as management meetings are typically increased and monitoring tasks intensified. At Techedge, starting immediately from the first week of lockdown, we activated a Management task force with bi-weekly virtual meetings to keep all countries aligned on the impacts, recovery strategies and actions in place to ensure employees' safety and business continuity.

Internal and external communications are equally important in business. With companies struggling to obtain financing from banks and investors, the ability to communicate an ethical and sustainable business can make all the difference. This means that non-financial aspects are of crucial relevance in driving investment decisions.

In short, organizations able to clearly communicate their positive social impact and robust governance policies are more likely to attract investors and obtain money at a lower cost

Change Management

ENSURE SUCCESSFUL TRANSFORMATION INITIATIVES

Digital transformation and change management are strongly coupled: they are born together, and both necessary to make organizations innovate and evolve while keeping the right balance.

Digital transformation is a main driver for enterprises’ organizational changes, and such changes must be supported and managed as a part of the transformation project itself.

In fact, introducing a new technology isn’t just about technology: you’re changing systems and operational models, possibly creating gaps in people’s usual processes and routines.

Every time change management is required, we offer our customers full support in the methodological approach and subsequent implementation of change management processes, guiding them in a structured plan from the initial gap analysis, to communication, onboarding and final adoption.
